Puncture Tones (2016), is a new composition by Chiara Giovando for voice, strings and subwoofers. Puncture Tones plays with the psychoacoustics phenomena of sonic masking, or the presence of a sound that partially or completely masks the perception of another sound. Using sculpture, graphical notation and a play between electronic and acoustic sound, Puncture Tones explores the concept of the mask as a reflective surface for subjectivity.

With Kristina Dutton, violin, Mia Bella D’Augelli, violin, Crystal Pascucci, cello, Danishta Rivera, voice and singing mask, Jake Freeman, voice and singing mask, Chiara Giovando, voice and electronics.

Puncture Tones will open with solo precision from Yasi Perera and a film program including new short works from Wei Li and light of the tulpa, an expanded cinema performance by arc that uses xerox printed 16mm film based on occult color theories found in the book Thought Forms (Annie Besant & C.W. Leadbeater. 1901). light of the tulpa is a stroboscopic inquiry into the visual and sonic invocations of the book's printed color fields.

Oxbow with Black Spirituals

$18 general / $12 for members of The Lab
8:00pm doors / 8:30pm music

Hailing from San Francisco, California, Oxbow is a legendary musical group known for their unique blend of noise, avant-garde jazz, musique concrete (AMG) and the Blues, creating bizarre and plangent soundscapes with overtones of paranoia, revulsion and exaltation. In a rare and unusual departure from the artful sound and fury that has earned them international renown, Oxbow presents an electricity-free evening of acoustic renditions from their songbook.

Black Spirituals, of Oakland CA, are a locally venerated duo of creative sound-makers who articulate meaning at the ecstatic intersection of tone-generating electronics & the heart-thumping, acoustic percussion technologies. Predicated upon their libidinal drive to produce the narrative of our musical expositions,  Black Spirituals mediates a threefold vernacular presence,  the instigation of unfurling cultural dynamics, and the relationship mediation collective logics:

      (1) Simultaneous soloistic vernacular development;
      (2) Employment of individual narratives in tandem; and,
      (3) Combined, multi-aesthetic approaches.

"DESTRUCTION is a song of mourning for what Antony Paul Farley calls "the motionless movement of death through slavery, segregation and neo-segregation." Drawing on themes of apocalypse, end times, and rapture found in Negro Spirituals, the work explores radical historical expressions, and invokes long held and continued calls to end our white supremacist world order. DESTRUCTION is a futuristic salvaging of the negro spirit in the ruins a western world in flames." - M. Lamar

Voice and piano M. Lamar
Music composed by M. Lamar and Hunter Hunt-Hendrix
Libretto by M. Lamar and Tucker Culbertson

Floaters is a kinetic laboratory of choreography, video and sound. Christine Bonansea developed Floaters over the course of two years, experimenting and performing variations of the piece in various countries. Improvisation became integral to adapting the piece to different performance contexts.  In every context, the audience is contained in the center of an environment made unstable by sound, projected light, and surrounded by the bodies of performers.
