As an instrumental unit, Horse Lords rely on a collective voice and focus to provide the band’s core strength; a process enriched by their disparate musical interests. The quartet, formed in 2010, embraces Renaissance counterpoint, covers composer Julius Eastman, plays instruments specially fretted for microtonality, and organizes its music through polyrhythmic matrices. The ingenious machinery of their music is humanized with exploration and passion. Their latest album, As It Happened, was released on RVNG Int’l.
Victoria Shen (aka Evicshen) is a sound artist, experimental music performer, and instrument-maker based in San Francisco. Shen's sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Her music features analog modular synthesizers, vinyl/resin records, and self-built electronics. Eschewing conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of extreme textures and gestural tones, Shen uses what she calls "chaotic sound" to oppose signal and information, eluding traditionally embedded meaning.
Foreign/Domestic, the duo of Zachary James Watkins & John Diaz, augurs high vibration resonance, making transparent the phenomenon of emotion and sound. Working it out in real time it can be unclear whether your flesh just turned to goosebumps in excitement or danger but life is fun that way: fight or flee, go or stay, blow or belong. When faced with such choices, always take both. Nothing is softer than ashes.
