The Bay Area art community mourns the loss of Minnette Lehmann, feminist artist, intellectual, educator, mother, grandmother, wife, and friend to many, who passed away in June, just shy of her 98th birthday. Minnette was one of the longest-serving board members of The Lab, serving for nearly 20 years.

Please gather with us for a memorial and celebration of Minnette’s extraordinary life, art, sharp wit, dry humor, and indelible legacy. The program will be Emcee’d by Kathy Brew with music by Richard Marriott. Everyone is welcome. (RSVP for a remote online streaming option.)

About Minnette

Since the 1940s, Lehmann was at the forefront of important Bay Area intellectual and artistic movements. She hosted countless artists, thinkers, and art-world gatherings at her San Francisco home and enchanting garden overlooking the Bay.

An embodiment of the “wild woman” archetype, she challenged and redefined domestic and artistic institutions for women, expanding possibilities through photography, performance art, collage, and painting. Her groundbreaking photographic series Trouble in Paradise documented a pivotal moment in American history when marriage itself became problematic. She received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for the work.

Over a 20-year teaching career at San Francisco State, the San Francisco Art Institute, and UC Extension, she mentored generations of artists while continually evolving her own practice. Her work, which processed personal triumphs and tragedies while offering fierce critiques of patriarchal culture, is held in collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Her papers will be archived at the San Francisco Public Library.

We invite you to share photos and videos of Minnette HERE for us to share at the gathering.
